Dear Community Leader/s,
You may be aware that the former Department of Immigration and Border Protection became part of the Department of Home Affairs on 20 December 2017.
The acting Regional Director, Rosemary Wilmot, and Community Liaison Officers, Kelly Alfris, Slavica Jurcevic, and Rhett Henkel, are traveling to Geelong on Friday 10 August 2018 to introduce ourselves, meet community leaders, and speak about the new department. We therefore would like to invite you to a meeting with us at 11:30am at the Diversitat building at 37-61 Vines Road, Hamlyn Heights. We would value the opportunity to meet you in person to discuss our roles and learn about the work of your community organisations. It would also give us the opportunity to update you on key developments that have occurred within the Department over the past 18 months and discuss any immigration policies / programs of interest to your communities.
For example, the Australian Government is looking to strengthen the test for Australian Citizenship. We would value the opportunity to discuss these reforms and hear what you think about it.
The Department is also seeking the assistance of community leaders to circulate information about the progressive expiry of Temporary Protection visas (TPV). The first TPVs were granted in April 2015, and as they are three year visas, they will begin to expire this year. Those affected TPV holders who intend to remain in Australia must apply for a further TPV or Safe Haven Enterprise visa (SHEV).
The Department also wishes to bring to the attention of community leaders for circulation, the latest information about the Community Support Program (CSP). This visa program enables Australian individuals, community organisations and businesses to help refugees with a job offer, or skills required to work and be financially independent, to settle permanently in Australia.
Please come along to discuss these and any other issues within the immigration portfolio that you would like to raise. Please RSVP by Wednesday 8 August 2018.
Mr Rhett Henkel
